The art of getting organic traffic starts from SEO but SEO is not limited to just on-page and off page SEO, Today it’s very important to code websites by keeping in mind the best SEO Practices so that your website loads faster, looks better and reads better to Google bots.
Remember Google bots are not humans they cannot see or use your website, rather what they do; they just get the code of your website in the form of XML. XML is just a simple text files which contains your code and for Google that’s the only source of getting to know about your website. So the task or mindset of the programmer should be to write code in more understandable manner. i.e. if you are coding company address then do not code it with italic tag rather use address tag as address tag is better representation.
Choose Better HTML Tags for Representation of Content
The very first step for any designer/developer to learn is to choose better HTML Tags. The most common mistakes coders do at the time of coding is to code with the mindset of getting the job done they want to. But as explained earlier your code is what Google will see, so why not make you code better representation of your website. Selecting right HTML Tags for every content section is very important. Here I will be discussing most common mistakes we do at the time of coding.
We Never Use Article Tag
This practice would help lot of bloggers! if your website is mainly basic on blog post or articles like bloggers have, by doing this small edit you can make your content better understandable and get good results from Google. We use paragraph tag but what about the idea to tell Google that these are the paragraphs of an article, won’t that be awesome? I will try to explain this point with example so that you may understand it better.
What we normally do at the time of coding blog post or page:
<title> your title goes here </title>
<p> first paragraph</p>
<p> second paragraph </p>
Here if we see we are not explaining to Google that these paragraphs belong to an articles or not .
The right way to do this is:
<p> first paragraph content </p>
<p>second paragraph content </p>
Here what we are doing, we are explaining to Google with the help of html tag that what I am writing is not just paragraph but the combination of these paragraphs make an article.
Use of Header Tag
Header tag is very common and I am glad that lot of people do this practice quiet often. Header tag is especially created for displaying your logo and menu of website, it’s very useful to define the header starting and ending point of header point , which will help google to sought out your website content is better way. Lets have its example below:
<img id=’logo’ src=’image.png’ alt=’logo of company’>
Your menu items here
In the image tag I am using alt attribute, alt tag is also known as alternative text with the help of this attribute you can tell Google what the image is about. So in easy words it’s like explaining your image with the help of text.
How to Use Heading Tag Effectively
Even if you do not know about HTML there is chance that you know about Heading tags.i.e H1, H2 and so on to H6. These tags are not just for sake of increase or decreasing the font size of text rather they have very vital use for Google bots. With the help of these heading tags Google determines the importance of different heading.
- H1 heading 1 tag should only be used once in a page, Google takes H1 tag as the most important heading of your page, so it will be confusing to use this tag twice, thrice or for content which does not represent the main website niche. H1 defines the content page and when your page is defined in clear and better way it will also reflect in Google Ranking.
- We have 6 different heading tags, use each of them with a plan and pattern. i.e. if you have any other heading after main heading or any other heading within main heading you will be using Heading 2 (H2) and if your Heading 2 tag has some sub heading use heading 3 (H3) tag for it.
Unfortunately this practice is not very common so it makes is even more important to practice it as it will give you edge over your competitors.
Use Strong Tag Instead of Bold
Many coders and website owner thinks that have a code that make sense SEO wise would cost them lot of effort and lot of money but the Devil lies within small details, it’s all about having awareness and common sense at the time of coding.
If we critically analyze bold and strong tag both technically do the same thing. The reason of giving preference strong over bold is, whenever you want to bold any part of content that logic behind bolding that part of content is to make prominent because its important. We use strong tag because it tells Google that this part of content is important and treat it not like a normal content.
Use Address Tag Instead of Italic
I think this point is straight enough, normally on the contact us page we want to have our address italicaly written so most of them of instance we simple use italic tag which is wrong. In HTML we have some tag that exactly matches our need and address tag is one of them. Address tag will italic your content but at the same time it will tell Google bot that’s this is address of the website’s company.
